Once Upon a Rose La Vie en Roses Series Book 1 eBook Laura Florand

Layla is a stressed out indy singer/songwriter, looking to recharge her creativity. She just inherited a little house in the south of France, a piece of land Matt thought he was going to inherit. There is no great misunderstanding or devious plots to get the land back, it was two lonely people discovering their roots and finding peace in each other. I loved Matt, he was growly but super sweet and shy, taking care of his family and protecting his land. Matt trying to hide his blushes and his romantic heart made me smile and aaah in delight. Layla needed someone to look after her and a place to belong. I liked all the male cousins interacting and can't wait to read about their stories.

Once Upon a Rose La Vie en Roses Series Book 1 eBook Laura Florand Reviews

5 hundred million dreamy stars...directly over Matthieu Rosier's valley! This book was so lovely, I'm getting a little teary-eyed, just remembering different passages this morning. Laura Florand is on my list of Very Most Favorite authors. All of her books are on the Keeper Shelf and have been Automatically One-Clicked. This particular book is the beginning of a new series, La Vie en Roses. I, myself, am a rose gardener and found myself eagerly anticipating the release of this first book. I knew that I would love it. I did not imagine just how much I would love it! Matthieu Rosier is my new favorite Florand hero. There was a new depth of passion in Once Upon a Rose. The attraction between Matt and Layla was immediate and the romance...intense and absolutely gorgeous! I think to describe the newness of the writing in this book would be to say that the characters were more well-adjusted. That, I believe, is largely due to the fact that they are part of this big, loving and connected family. I know that I am going to fall in love with every one of these cousins! Matt...this man said the most romantic things. He was emotionally mature and self-assured...very sexy! Once he opened his heart to Layla, he was able to reveal that tenderness that he had previously tried so desperately to hide. Oh, but what a tender and loving man he was! Maybe, as a fellow gardener, I related to the level of his desire to nurture and care for those roses...and his people. Watching his heart find the safe place to land was really a beautiful thing. Layla was surprisingly patient and wise. She was an artist and, therefore, had a different understanding of what people are truly thinking/feeling behind the words that they are saying. I was impressed with the way she was so believably written. My initial response to her was NOT favorable. I did not believe that she would have the level of maturity that would be fitting for this love affair. In the end, Laura drew a heroine who had just the right amount of vulnerability to call to our hero. More than that, she was grown-up enough to meet the challenge of his skepticism with the gift of her experience. I would not say that Layla is my favorite Florand heroine, but I did like her. I just loved Matthieu A LOT!
I have previously mentioned, in my reviews of her other books, how much I love this author's ability to paint such a tactile picture of her setting. Is there a more romantic setting for a love story than France? I think not! As I read Once Upon a Rose, I found myself deciding that Laura Florand writes novels much the same way Claude Monet painted landscapes. Monet had this particular brush-stroke that was his trademark...his alone. His paintings are fairytale beautiful. Laura's talent in writing the most dreamy, water-color, fantastically beautiful love stories stands alone. I don't want to miss a single fantastically beautiful word! They are fairytales for grown-ups. Cousin Tristan's fairytale is next for this series and I can't wait for that one! What a rascal!
A stand alone read with a HEA. This story is set in France. It takes place on an acreage that is used to grow roses for the big perfume makers. The same family has owned it for generations and it is passed down to the oldest son to oldest son. The grandfather is still alive but he is grooming his oldest grandson to take over. There are several cousins and they all pitch in to help from time to time but they are free to pursue their own interests. they are a big, boisterous group and are constantly ragging on each other.

The heroine is an American musician and song writer. She has been granted ownership to a house on the property. She didn't inherit because the distant relative is still alive and approaching her 90's. Not sure how that works but maybe in France it is different from the USA. Of course, the family is very upset that a foreigner got possession of a house on their beloved land.

This is their story. I will admit that I DNF. The story starts off with a big drunken party for the oldest cousin, Matt's birthday party. The heroine knocks on the door because her car has broken down and she needs help. They assume she is there for Matt so they welcome her with open arms in their drunken stupor. She is sort of interested in all these big, hunky guys but is also a little bit leery of their actions. I just have a hard time with excessive drinking. Just my thing, to each his own. At the party there are a lot of characters introduce and I was a bit confused with trying to keep up with who is who and their personality. Even the aunts were a bit loaded. So, I was not off to a good start.

The oldest heir is feeling the weight of inheriting and being responsible especially when the cousins seem to spend more time razzing him and setting him up for the next big joke rather than taking his position seriously. He does go on and on about his position. The heroine had a one hit wonder and now she seems to have hit a block. The music is not coming and her "people" are badgering her to get the next album out. So she wants to retreat to see if her music will return. She is very attracted to the heir but there are some issues involved. I think I just got tired of going over and over the problems they each had and didn't feel like things were moving on. I read mixed reviews as I was trying to decide whether to stick with the story or move on. I did agree with some of the reviewers. But I decided to move on. I would suggest that one read the book for themselves and make their own decision as to whether the book is for them or not. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone because my issues may not be theirs.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 2/13/18
Light and fun, this may be one of my favorite Laura Floarabd books so far. Layla and Matt's story was fun to be a part of, and the Rosier family's story and the Valley make such an incredible backdrop. I fell in love with the Rosier boys and want one for myself!

My only gripe would be that everything seemed to be wrapped up quickly--so in terms of plot, there wasn't much in the second half of the book. But the more Matt and Layla flirt and get closer each other, the more I wanted to read.
