Overall: 4 Stars

Plot /Storyline: 4 Stars

Thankfully, this is a young adult book that does not center on a love triangle. Intrigue, deception, repression, and forbidden romance are more than enough to carry this tale along.

New Terra: Humans and Weres live together on a new world after leaving Earth to escape overcrowding; for Weres this is a chance to come out of hiding.

The heart of Werelove: Dusk Conspiracy is the story of Laylah. Motherless, seventeen year old Laylah. Laylah does not know she is a Were because her father, Henry LeCroix, is a chemist who has been dosing her with chemicals to suppress her animal side since she was a small child.

Now Laylah is seventeen, and lives the life of a normal seventeen year old human. Well, an almost seventeen year old human from a rich household with an alpha male father. Henry treats Laylah with contempt and an almost fanatical iron fist.

As long as they are at his home, his family of Weres are not allowed to shift. He does not want Laylah to knowingly be in contact with any Weres at all. Henry spends all of his time at his laboratory where he works on finding a way to suppress and subdue the genes that make Weres unique, and keeping the knowledge of Laylah's heritage hidden from her.

Laylah's Were-born aggression is so suppressed that she is the victim of bullying at her high school and does nothing to fight back or stop it. She is meek and reticent. Her only friend is Britta, a bold and brash young lady, who while human herself, is dating a rhino-Were.

Laylah is the epicenter of a long standing feud in the Were-world politics because her parents were from differing species of Weres. The Alpha of another wolf-Were tribe, Zina, killed her mother when she was four and is plotting against Laylah and Henry. This Alpha wants to capture Laylah and use her as bait to catch Henry. As the Alpha's henchmen close in, Henry's unrelenting strictness chafes Laylah more and more, leading to choices that could end in disaster.

Can Laylah's disowned uncle, Stefan, and her forbidden love-interest, Donil, save her from herself and Zina?

Characters: 4 Stars

Laylah: Unknowingly the victim of suppressive gene therapy ordered by her father Henry, Laylah is a mousy young woman who is struggling to gain confidence and self-belief. She knows her father's rules and regulations are keeping her a prisoner, but she has no clue why he is doing it.

Britta: Laylah's best and only friend is a human girl who, like Laylah herself, does not know that Laylah is a wolf-tribe Were. She feels sorry for Laylah and her dealings with Henry. She wants Laylah to be more; more self-assured, more outgoing, able to go place and do things, meet more people. She finds ways to help Laylah deal with her life and helps Laylah begin stretching her boundaries.

Henry LeCroix: Alpha of the LeCroix family of wolf-tribe Weres, Henry is a scientist who not only knows he shouldn't be a father, but has often felt like he resented having to interact with his daughter Laylah at all. He is a dictatorial man who expects blind obedience from a teenager whom he cannot stand to be around. His only joy in life was his wife Helen and without her around he does not care about anyone else's feelings or opinions.

Zina: Fighting to keep the Were-tribes pure, Zina sees the marriage of Henry and Helen as being unnatural and the resulting child Laylah as an abomination. Zina once loved Henry, but he rejected her. She feels that rejection on more than one level because he did not only reject her, he chose to marry a woman from a non-werewolf tribe. She is blinded by the deep-seated need to avenge the slights to herself and the conviction that a mixed-breed child cannot be allowed to live.

Jacques: Henry's Beta, or second-in-command, in the LeCroix family. Jacques was entrusted with the responsibilities of raising and caring for Laylah after her mother's murder. Jacques is emotionally the father that Laylah does not have in Henry. Jacques also has the dubious responsibility of making sure that Laylah follows all of Henry's orders, whether Jacques believes they are the right thing to do or not.

Naiya: Naiya is the cook, house-keeper, and substitute mother that worries and looks after Laylah when she can. After her lover gets caught as a traitor Naiya goes a bit off the deep end. She has always thought Laylah needed to get more out of life, but followed her Alpha's - Henry's - rules. When Henry kills her lover, she disregards those rules and helps Laylah escape the mansion's compound.

Donil: The young Alpha of a wolf-Were tribe that neighbors Henry's domain. Donil has found his mate - Laylah. How can he woo and protect her without revealing his wolf-nature, or her own?

Stefan: Henry's brother. Once loved Zina and was fighting on her side the night Helen was killed. He was outcast and disinherited - and now thirteen years later, Stefan has learned his lesson and tries to keep a covert eye on Laylah as she is the last person he can care about and love. Stefan watchers over Laylah while she is at school, silently supporting her.

When Zina gathers her forces for war once again, Stephan agrees to lead the Council's forces against her. That is, until the Council decides to adopt a `wait and see' policy. This causes Stephan to take matters into his own hands.

Writing: 4 stars

This story drew me in. I felt sorry for Laylah. The large cast was a little cumbersome at first, as were the time jumps, but once the story settled in, so did I. The writing was on par with the norms for the genre, but the characters made me feel for them, care about them, and ultimately, wonder, what happens next?

Werelove Dusk Conspiracy Lakisha Spletzer JD Hollyfield 9781449900878 Books Reviews

Loved it needed more free stories
This was a great book. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
It is a sick dark series about a girl that gets beaten and raped. I kept hoping that it would get better, but it never did. Don't waste your time or money. I don't like giving bad reviews, but I could not let people know what they are getting into.
Not for me. Didn't have any pressing desire to read more in this series. It had great potential but the author was not able to carry this through. The world's view of Alphas was very poor. If you take away the dominant genes of protecting the weaker, you just loose me. Also, the ideas of "mate" were poor. There was nothing strong in this book.
I felt so bad for Laylah and how she was being treated no wonder she was so timid and I kept finding myself wishing she would stand up for herself but the one time she did smh I loved how Donli was there for her, and always wanting to protect her.i must admit I really hate her father, but I loved Stefan and I can't wait to read more about him😄do not pass this book by you will be entertained through out the whole book...on to book two
The main character needed to develope faster....whinny and timid can only last so long before we need to see some growth....

Hated the ending. Point 1) If the book is going to be just the first in a series, be more upfront about it. Point 2) If a book is going to be a part of a series of books you must resolve more of the plot points. It actually ended as if ending a chapter.

I would not recommend reading intill more books are published in the series. Otherwise you will be very frustrated and feel it was a waste of your time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read all YA books that I buy, to insure they are suitable for my grandchildren, and with this one I found myself totally enraptured with the story. The writing was well done, the characters believable, and the storyline was great. That I enjoyed what I read, was the thing I used to judge the worth of the book. It surpassed my expectations. I would be willing to get the rest of the series for myself, even if my grandchildren do not care for it. It is a new, fresh look at the were/human relationship. With characters you want to slap down, and some you would kill off. Yet there are some you want to hug, and comfort. I look forward to getting the rest of the series. Eve though I didn't like the ending. I though it ended too soon, and left the outcome with too many unanswered questions. Get it, read it and enjoy the story, as I did. You won't regret the purchase of this book.
