Is it great writing? No. Is it a heck of a thrill ride , full adrenaline witty banter abound? Yes. This is a recurring favorite of kids around the age of ten and eleven. I have read it five times and I have given it to many kids, all of whom have become readers primarily due to this book and Rick Riordan's. In this, Skulduggery is a crime-fighting skeleton with a Groucho Marx wit, and he encounters a girl name Stephanie who is bored with her life. Needless to say, they become friends and their lives intersect. I liked the fast-paced plot, and when I read it with the kids, they found the humor absolutely hilarious.Caveat : there are some "damns" and "hells" in here, and there is reference to magic. This didn't offend me, but some may not like that aspect. Personally, the book is a heckuva rollercoaster through Ireland and beyond. If you have a boy or girl around this age and you don't know what to recommend, get this. They will love it.

Skulduggery Pleasant Derek Landy Tom Percival Books Reviews
In my mournaing state after reading Artemis Fowl 8, I started looking for a new series. People told me that I should try Skulduggery Pleasant. I shrugged, and after seeing that it was one ale, I bought the first one.
It starts out with the death of and uncle and mysterious things happening to our protangonist. I rolled, my eyes, this seemed too much like half of the YA wizard/magical books out on the market, but the style was very readable so I pushed on. Once I got to chapter three, I was hooked. While the first chapter was pretty common, everything else was original. A walking, talking skeleton. This seemed like it was written for TV judging by the banter, but it was funny. This book brought back what I have been looking for, wich was a tight knit group of people that are witty, but do not totally trust ech other, and an orignal take on a fantasy world.
The only thing that bothered me was the fact that some minor characters were very forgettable, and sometimes tjose characters came back to play a big part, causing me to think, "Who the heck are yo...ohhh." The parent-kid relationship wasn't very strong either. And then there was the cheesiness in names. However, if you are looking for a series that is fresh, original, and filled to bursting with all kinds of questionable characters, Go on and try the first one.
The characters made this book for me. Stephanie is a smart and strong heroine. Like many other protagonists in "hidden world" books, she is bored with her ordinary life and jumps at the chance to try a new life. I appreciated the fact that she didn't just magically fit perfectly into this world. She's surrounded by magical people and she can't do magic. That's a big problem when people are trying to kill you. That doesn't stop her from working on it though. She practices through out the book and she can finally to a teensy bit of magic.
Skulduggery was... interesting. I liked his personality and how he and Stephanie got along. Seriously the quick, witty banter between the two of them was the best part of the book. I was a bit weirded out by the fact that he's a 100+ year old skeleton and he's hanging out with a 12 year old. That's weird right? Sure nothing weird went on with them but it was a bit odd.
I didn't enjoy the story as much as I thought I would. I'm always a fan of "hidden world"/save the world books so I should have liked this book. Something just never completely clicked for me. The mythos of the story was a bit too new age-y. Maybe it wasn't new age-y per se but that's the vibe I was getting from it. I kind of got in to the habit of skimming over sections where they went into details about the ancient one and the stone. Basically the mythos wasn't for me but it was done well.
My 10 year old son loves this book so much he arm-twisted me into reading it, and even I liked it. It's a PI book featuring a sarcastic, cynical skeleton as the PI. I recommend it for any fan of Harry Potter, Gregor the Overlander, The Lightning Thief, the City of Ember or other Young Adult fantasy novels.
But mostly I wanted to say if you are looking at this review of a used paperback version of the book "Skulduggery Pleasant", what you'll actually get is the book "Scepter of the Ancients (Skulduggery Pleasant)". They are the same book...the first title was the hardcover edition; the title was changed for the American paperback edition released in 2009. sells the paperback new. I was mislead into thinking it was a different book (different covers, different titles, one out of print and selling used for premium prices), and thus I ordered both -- and wound up with exactly the same book, one new from , one used and more expensive from Marketplace!
